Night of Lights

Every year at Christmastime a myriad of tiny lights appear sparkling in the night. Unlike the often unnoticed twinkling stars in the sky above, these shining lights are close and noticeable. They illuminate roof lines and doorways, trees and driveways, store fronts and streets. Usually white, but sometimes multicolored, these small lights hang like icicles or march straight in a line following the curve of a garden bed or the angles of a front porch. Whether wrapped around trees or outlining a window, these lights add brightness and beauty for all to see.

Christmas lights. Some neighborhoods have a reputation for houses decorated with lots of lights, and cars filled with families of wide eyed children will slowly wind through those streets just to see them. Some houses have extraordinary displays of Christmas lights complete with synchronized music (and a jaw dropping electricity bill for the month). Some small towns and cities go all out with white lights strung on many of the homes, store fronts, trees and shrubs. One of these cities is St. Augustine, Florida.

This historic town was first settled in 1565 by the Spanish and was an important settlement throughout Florida's history. Today the historic district of St. Augustine is a popular destination for tourists, school groups, history buffs, and newlyweds. The annual Nights of Lights Festival boasts over 2 million lights which shine nightly for two months. If you are ever in the area, the lights of St. Augustine are quite the sight!

St. Augustine is about an hour drive from my home and I've been there many times over the years. Recently three of my children and I went to see the lights again. We had a memorable time walking past the decorated shops, strolling through the plaza where lights drape gracefully from the trees, and waving at folks riding the Holly Jolly Trolley.

After we had found a parking spot, there was a heavy downpour of rain for about 20 minutes. We sat in the car to wait for the rain to stop before venturing out - with our umbrellas so that we would be prepared if there was another downpour. Thankfully, it didn't rain again, but the air was heavy with humidity and the sky was misty. I enjoyed taking photos along the way, which I will share with you in a slideshow. These pictures taken with my little pocket camera on a misty December night only give an impression of the wonderful lights to see in St. Augustine.

Where have you gone to see Christmas lights? Tell me in the comment section below.
Thanks for stopping by, and may your December nights shine brightly with twinkling lights!

I would have enjoyed being with you and to enjoy the night of lights of St. Augustine. Houses are being decorated and lit around our area and they lighten the spirit on the cold winter nights.

If you haven't visited the Nights of Lights in St. Augustine during the holiday season, add it to your "to do" list. :)

There is at least one house with extensive holiday decorations on the road in and out of the little peninsula I live on, so I don't really need to travel someplace special just to see Christmas lights. My husband's family would go to a specific neighborhood outside of Portland to see lights each year, however.

I live in a neighborhood where lots of homes are decorated, too. We usually take one evening during this month to drive around to see them. It's always a fun family time!

I like the idea of just driving around locally to see the lights of your neighbors. That's usually what I prefer to do as well.

Our neighbor directly across the street does a really nice Christmas display each year. When the kids were little, we would usually get to Kansas City at some time during the Christmas season. If so, we would always make a trip down to the Plaza. It's a high end shopping area of Spanish style buildings, and at Christmas the whole area is decorated with white Christmas lights. My daughter always called it "Shine On", because of a song in the commercial they used to advertise it. If you are ever in Kansas City at Christmas time, you should check it out, and you can do a little shopping too.

The Kansas City Plaza lit up with white lights sounds like a fun place to visit during the Christmas season!

St. Augustine is sooo beautiful with all the lights. Had the pleasure to visit there several years ago right before Christmas. A favorite place of mine is along the San Antonio River Walk where it seems like millions of little white lights are strung all through the trees and farolitos line the walkway. The only time the River Walk is a magical place (:

My husband and I visited San Antonio several years ago and enjoyed the River Walk with lights at night. Beautiful!

Handmade Soaps - Free Shipping - Courage

Discover the benefits of using handmade soap - gentle cleansing, luxurious lather, soft skin. Handmade from start to finish, with beautiful color and wonderful fragrance, natural ingredients are combined to produce a simply unique bar of handcrafted soap.

You are sure to be delighted with my handcrafted artisan soaps. Due to the handmade nature of these beautiful soaps, individual bars may vary from the photos shown. Each bar of handmade soap from The Lathered Lamb is truly one of a kind!

My handcrafted artisan soaps are made using the cold process method of soap making from scratch. Vegetable oils and butters are mixed with sodium hydroxide, resulting in a chemical reaction which produces natural soap. Small batches are made in my kitchen with care and attention to detail. Some batches are limited edition, so snag a bar while they are available because once they're gone, they're gone!

My original soap formulas produce luxury soaps with silky, bubbly lather that gently cleans the skin. These handmade soaps are scented with body safe fragrance or essential oils and are colored with natural pigments. Each bar of my handcrafted soap weighs over 4 ounces and comes wrapped in an attractive label with a complete ingredient list. Shrink wrap protects the soap while ensuring the fragrance can be smelled through an opening in the back.

Did you know that body wash is made with detergents? Sodium lauryl sulfate and other sulfates strip the skin of beneficial body oils. Sure a body wash smells great and looks pretty. Plus the plastic container is convenient, even if it usually ends up in a landfill, but many folks don't realize that they could wash their dishes with that bubbly body wash!

Handmade soap is a simple solution. Sometimes the old ways are better after all. Detergents have only been around for 100 years, after being developed in Germany during World War 1. Soap making, however, has been an ongoing craft for thousands of years.

Handmade soap is an affordable luxury. Pamper yourself or someone special today with a bar of soap from The Lathered Lamb. Live Simply. Use Soap.
